Warning: the Slattadale Car Park and toilets at Loch Maree are closed due to tree felling work with dangerous machinery. We hope to have this done by 14 April 2025.
There is an alternative access to the Tollie path which will be signed. Please follow all safety signage. Thanks for your understanding.
Half way between Gairloch and Kinlochewe, you can stroll beneath the trees and picnic by Loch Maree, with superb views across the water to the mountains of Letterewe.
There are pockets of ancient oak and birch woodland in the forest, while the islands in the loch hold pristine remnants of ancient Caledonian Pinewood. Visit nearby Beinn Eighe National Nature Reserve to explore this magical environment at close quarters.
Slattadale is the start (or finish) for the Tollie path, a fine 5 mile (8 km) route to Poolewe. It takes you through pine woodland and open moorland, and makes a good there-and-back-again outing to enjoy the views in both directions. Watch for wildlife as you go: black throated divers nest on Loch Maree, and white tailed eagle sometimes come to fish.
The path is rough with long moderate slopes and some wet patches. Allow 2½ - 3 hours for a one-way trip.
Public toilets are available from 1 April to 31 October at the Slattadale car park. The nearest places to eat are in Kinlochewe or Gairloch.
The charges to park at Slattadale are:
