Gleann a Gealbhan

Where we are

Forest temporarily closed

Gleann a Gealbhan and the trail to Arichonan is closed due to Forest Operations immediately adjacent to this facility. We are asking members of the public to use the nearby trails as an alternative whilst we remove the conifers to make way for mixed broadleaves and natural regeneration as part of our land management plan for the area. We hope to be completed by January 2025. The nearest alternative trails ca be found at Barnluasgan and Crinan.

About

Take an atmospheric stroll in the heart of Knapdale

A winding trail will lead you up through the woods to the ruins of Arichonan, where you can imagine the life of the tenants who had to leave the village in 1848. There are fine views towards Caol Scotnish and beyond into Loch Sween from this poignant spot.

A lovely walk through the larch trees to the haunting ruins of a clearance village abandoned in the mid-19th century. Good views down Caol Scotnish.

Uneven grassy path, with narrow and muddy sections. One long fairly steep slope. Includes a road crossing and some exposed tree roots.

More information

Arichonan, the largest and most important of a group of five townships in this area, was cleared of its tenants by the landlord in 1848. Many of the buildings are still in remarkable condition and you can begin to imagine life here in the past as you wander amongst them. Find out more about Arichonan’s history on our forest heritage pages.

The trail starts across the road from the car park. Please take care crossing the road.
